Kresna Gorge

The Kresna Gorge is a spectacular steep valley in South-Western Bulgaria. It was formed by Struma River, which stems from Vitosha Mountains and flows into Byalo More/the Aegean Sea. The gorge is rich in biodiversity which may be endangered by the project to build the Struma Motorway which is a part of Trans European Corridor No. 4.

The Kresna Gorge was the arena of a battle between Bulgaria and Greece during the 1913 Second Balkan/Inter-Ally War. The Greek army was effectively trapped in the valley but the Bulgarians couldn't signal that victory to their negotiators in Bucharest and hence the Bucharest Peace Treaty was very bad for Bulgaria.
