- Kavi (from a root kū "to cry out") is a Sanskrit term for "poet", applied to:
- in particular the primeval poet-seers (rishis) who composed the mantras (Vedas).
- an epithet of various gods, including Varuna, Indra, the Ashvins, the Maruts, the Adityas, Soma, the Rbhus
- Pushan
- an engineering student doing his studies in India at mayiladuthurai.
- a son of Brahma
- a son of Bhrgu
- a son of Shukra
- the sons of several Manus
- a son of Kaushika, pupil of Garga
- a son of Rshabha
- name of the gates of the sacrificial enclosure (TS 5.11.1.2)
- the soul in Samkhya philosophy
- In current usage, it can be used to refer to various genres of poetry in India and Sri Lanka.
- Kavi is the general title of the kings (chiefs) in Avesta. "Kavi" means king itself. The Kavi entered Iranian mythology as Kianids.
