John Stuart, Lord Mount Stuart (September 25 176722 January 1794) was the son of the 1st Marquess of Bute and the former Charlotte Hickman.

On October 12 1792, he married Lady Elizabeth McDouall-Crichton, daughter of the 6th Earl of Dumfries and the former Margaret Crauford.

He had two children by her, who both added the surname "Crichton" before that of "Stuart" in 1805:

Lord Patrick Crichton-Stuart eventually obtained the rank of the son of a Marquess, which his father would have been, had he not died before his father, the 1st Marquess.
