Jersey Round Tower

The Round Towers in the island of Jersey were built from the end of the 18th century. In total 31 towers were built, but now only 24 remain all along the coast.

The decision to build the towers was made by the governor, Henry Seymour Conway because the defence of the island was regarded insufficient after the Battle of Jersey (1781).

Although frequently called Martello towers, the Round Towers are taller in shape and the early towers predate the development of true Martello towers.

During the German Occupation of the Channel Islands some of the Round Towers were adapted for use by the occupying forces 1940-1945.
