Jerry Murrien de Jong (born August 29, 1964 in Paramaribo, Suriname) is a former Dutch football player and international. He is the father of Hamburger SV player Nigel de Jong. He played for Telstar, SC Heerenveen, PSV Eindhoven, FC Groningen, SM Caen, FC Eindhoven, MVV Maastricht and the Netherlands.

The beginning

De Jong started off his career in the first division where he played for Stormvogels Telstar and SC Heerenveen. He earned a reputation as a tough tackling defender and his performances did not go unnoticed by top flight clubs. In the summer of 1989 he therefore moved to Dutch top club PSV.

PSV

Unfortunately Jerry de Jong's career never really picked up at PSV due to the stiff competition for a starting line-up berth. After having played only 54 matches (2 goals) in 5 years, including a short loan spell at FC Groningen, he was eventually let go. However, during his time at PSV, he did cap 3 times for the Netherlands. He made his debut on the 21st of November 1990 against Greece, in a qualifying match for Euro 1992. His last match was on the 17th of april 1991, in a qualifying match against Finland. In 1994, he moved on to Ligue 1 outfit SM Caen.

Post PSV era and scandal

After PSV, De Jong moved to SM Caen. However, after just one season De Jong was forced to move back to the Netherlands, due to the fact that Caen had relegated to the Ligue 2. After this, De Jong's career gradually descended into abysmal form. He found employment in the Eerste Divisie and developed a gambling problem. He was eventually fired from his last team, MVV Maastricht, because of his addiction. He had allegedly stolen money and credit cards from his team mates in order to pay off his substantial gambling debts.
