James West was the second full-time secretary of Newton Heath (the term 'manager' was not used at Manchester United until the arrival of Jack Robson). He oversaw the collapse and eventual bankruptcy of Newton Heath, followed by the club's re-birth as Manchester United on 28 April 1902.
