Insein Township

Insein is a township located north of Yangon, in southern Burma. It is home to one of Burma's most infamous prisons (Insein Prison ), built by the British, which houses thousands of political prisoners. Insein also contains a large marble Buddha image, called the Chaukdawgyi Paya (Lawka Chantha Abaya Laba Muni Buddha), which was brought from upper Myanmar under the direction of Khin Nyunt. It was also taken by the Karen National Defence Organisation (KNDO) on 31 January 1949, initiating the rebellion of the Karen against the Burmese government.
