Portuguese infante of the
House of Braganza son of
King Louis I of
Portugal and his wife
Maria Pia of Savoy. His full name was
Afonso Henriques Maria Luís Pedro de Alcântara Carlos Humberto Amadeu Fernando António Miguel Gabriel Gonzaga Xavier Francisco de Assis João Augusto Júlio Valfando Inácio de Saxe-Coburgo e Gotha de Bragança.
Family
He was born during the reign of his father and was created Duke of Porto.
He was a younger brother of Carlos I of Portugal. His paternal first cousins included (among others) Frederick Augustus III of Saxony, Princess Maria Josepha of Saxony, Prince Wilhelm of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and Ferdinand I of Romania.
His maternal first cousins included (among others) Napoléon Victor Bonaparte, Victor Emmanuel III of Italy, Emanuele Filiberto, 2nd Duke of Aosta, Vittorio Emanuele, Count of Turin, Luigi Amedeo, Duke of the Abruzzi, Umberto, Count of Salemi.
Life account
Later, he acted as
Constable of Portugal and was the last
viceroy of
Portuguese India.
Afonso was known for his bon-vivant lifestyle. He was a lover of car races and was responsible for the first races in Portugal. He also became known of the public because of the enormous fortunes he used to lose in casinos. After the Proclamation of the Portuguese First Republic in 1910 Afonso went into exile first in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland with his nephew the deposed-King Manuel II, and after that he went to Italy.
Marriage
In 1917 in
Rome, Afonso married
morganatically to an American called
Nevada Stoody Hayes. He tried to get the approval of his marriage but found strong opposition in the form of his nephew and the rest of the Royal Family. His pension was cut and Afonso began to live in obscurity. After his and Manuel II's death, Nevada demanded the Portuguese
republican government the recognition of all the
Bragança's patrimony to herself. Because of that she was briefly arrested.
