Despite the antisocial/solitary appearance of individual sports, they can still be competitive. For example, such athletes can compete against their own best efforts, without the risks of unhealthy rivalries which are more likely to be cultivated in a team environment.
Many are or have been dismissed as "not really a sport" by casual observers. Golf, skateboarding, and bowling stand out as examples of this, perhaps more due to their visibility and popularity than any other factor.
