The city was founded on May 1, 1963. It was home to JEF United.
The city's economy is fueled by a large industrial complex overlooking Tokyo Bay. It contains several major oil refineries, power companies, and petrochemical companies.
Ichihara maintains a sister city relationship with Mobile, Alabama, USA.
