The Halton District School Board serves public school students throughout Halton Region, including the municipalities of Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville. Its administration area is to the southwest of the city of Toronto. In 2006-2007, it served almost 50,000 students, excluding those in adult, alternative, and Community Education programs. It is commonly referred to as the HDSB.

The Board operates 76 elementary schools, and 16 secondary schools (listed below).

East Area (Oakville)

The Board also operates Gary Allan High School for adult, alternative and Community Education programs.

The Board has closed two of its secondary schools in recent years:

• Oakville's Queen Elizabeth Park School High School was operated by the Board until June, 2004, at which time it was closed and replaced by Abbey Park High School.
• Also in June, 2004, Lord Elgin High School and General Brock High School were amalgamated into the new Robert Bateman High School in Burlington.

Programming

In recent years, the School Board has introduced programming (called Pathways) to encourage all post-secondary options, from apprenticeship to college to university to the workshop, as developed by the Ministry of Education.

The Board has introduced several foods schools, International Baccheloreate (IB Diploma Programme), specialist high skills majors and other unique programs for students.

Achievement

Halton region has been ranked as the safest place to live in the Greater Toronto Area, as of a 2008 Maclean's national report

Trustees

Scandal ensued for the Board between 2000-2006, involving current and former Trustees , and then Director of Education.

Since mandated by the Ontario Ministry of Education, Halton has annually elected 2 Student Trustees.
