Grootebroek is a town in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is located in the municipality of Stede Broec.
Grootebroek was a separate municipality until 1979. To understand why the town is called Grootebroek you first nead to know the meaning of the word. Groote is Dutch for big. The next part of the word is broek. In these days broek is Dutch for pants but some centuries ago it was Dutch for swamp. So that makes it Bigswamp. Before the town existed there were 2 swamps a litte one (placed were now is what called Lutjebroek) and a big one which is now Grootebroek.
