Getreidegasse (also known as Grain Lane) is a busy shopping street in the Old Town section of Salzburg. The house at no. 9 Getreidegasse is where the famed Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born and lived until he was 17. Originalled called Trabegasse (derived from Traben - to trot) its name was changed several times to create the odd Cereal Street (literal translation of Getreidegasse).
It is a law in Salzburg to designate shops by hanging iron signs over the shop, making this street unique of its kind. It is in this street where you can see daily the famous puppet woman, who sells puppets since 1987, standing on the street with her brown basket .
The Getreidegasse was recently selected as the main motif of a very high value collectors' coin: the Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart commemorative coin, minted in February 1 2006. The obverse shows a view of down the Getreidegasse. In the foreground is the house where Mozart was born, while the Getreidegasse stretches off back to the right.
