George D’Oyly Snow
(1903 - 1977) was a career school master who later served for a decade
as the fifth Bishop of Whitby
. Educated at Winchester College
and Oriel College, Oxford
, he then became an assistant master at Eton College
(towards the end of which time he was ordained
). After Eton
he became Chaplain
of Charterhouse School
, and then Headmaster
of Ardingly College
He was appointed Prebendary of Chichester Cathedral in 1959 before elevation to the Episcopate two years later. A tall man and prolific author he continued in retirement to Chair the National Society.
He was the son of First World War General Thomas D'Oyly Snow, father of Channel 4 newscaster Jon Snow, uncle of television presenter Peter Snow, and great-uncle to television presenter Dan Snow.
