The masculine name George and the less common feminine form Georgia are an adaptation of the Greek name Georgios (Γεώργιος), which is derived from the Greek word Georgos (Γεωργός), "farmer" or "earth-worker". The word Γεωργος is a compound word, formed by the words Ge (Γῆ), "earth", "soil" and ergon (ἔργον)
