Galatas is a small mainland town it has a new high school, medical center, a church, banks and a new sea front area (plateia) overlooking Poros Island. Galatas connects to the island of Poros with small boats (water taxi's). In ancient times, a sump was between Galatas and Poros. Galatas also has many independent shops some businesses and plenty of tavernas.
Until the 1960s, the area was home to many goats that produced milk and cheese and gave it the name Galatas (meaning milk fields)
The area is beautiful. The mountain range Anderes overlooks the Saronic Gulf and the Athens coastline. It is fast becoming a popular place to build homes and development is higher now than that of Poros.
