Faizabad

Faizabad or Feyzabad, city (1992 est. pop. 9,098), capital of Badakhshan prov., NE Afghanistan, on the Kokcha River. The chief commercial and administrative center of NE Afghanistan and the Pamir region, Faizabad also has rice and flour mills. Most of its people are Tajiks. In winter the city is sometimes isolated by deep snow. In 1979 it was a focus of Afghan guerrillas attempting to repel the Soviet invasion. Faizabad was taken by Soviet forces in 1980 and became a major Soviet garrison town.

Faizabad

Faizabad or Fyzabad, town (1991 pop. 176,922), Uttar Pradesh state, N central India, on the Ghaghara River. It is a joint municipality with Ayodhya. A district administrative center and market town, Faizabad trades in local produce and has sugar refineries. A government college is in the city and a military cantonment on the outskirts. Faizabad was the capital (1724-75) of the kingdom of Oudh (1724-1856). The mausoleum (c.1816) of a royal consort is in the city.

Faizabad (Hindi: फ़ैज़ाबाद, Urdu: فیض آباد) is a city and a municipal board in Faizabad district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is a city on the banks of river Ghaghra (Saryu)in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Faizabad has a sister city Ayodhya, considered to be the birthplace of Lord Ram. Faizabad was the first capital of the Nawabs of Awadh. Asaf-ud-Daula, son of Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula made Lucknow the capital of Awadh. Faizabad and Ayodhya have a great heritage and have many monumental sites. The city of Ayodhya is known for its Hindu temples. In Faizabad city there are many monuments of Nawabs, like tomb of Bahu Begum, Gulab-bari and many more. Ayodhya is also the birth place of first Tirthankar of the Jain religion, Shri Rishabh Dev. He is known as the father of Jain religion. The legend of Awadh Umrao Jaan was born in Faizabad and her childhood name was Ameeran. Another legend and a great Hindi writer Mr. Radhika Prasad Tripathi was from this city, his work on Sai Data Sampraday was greatly admired. Akhtaribai Faizabadi, or Begum Akhtar was born in Faizabad. She was the one the best ghazals, dadras,thumris, etc. singer.

Geography

Faizabad is located at . It has an average elevation of 97 metres (318 feet). As of 2001 India census, Faizabad had a population of 144,924. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Faizabad has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 67%. In Faizabad, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Education

There are two Universities in Faizabad District, Dr.Ram Manohar Lohia Awadh University (formerly Awadh University) Awadh University and Narendra Dev University of Agriculture and Technology (NDUAT). Kamta Prasad Sundar Lal Saket Post-Graduate degree college, (One of the largest PG college in eastern UP) is also situated in Faizabad.
