Everest, Sir George, 1790-1866, British surveyor, b. Breconshire, Wales. He worked on the trigonometrical survey of India from 1806 to 1843. He became superintendent of the survey in 1823 and surveyor general of India in 1830; Mt. Everest is named for him. He was knighted in 1861.

Everest, Mount, peak, 29,035 ft (8,850 m) high, on the border of Tibet and Nepal, in the central Himalayas. It is the highest elevation in the world. Called Chomolungma or Qomolangma [Mother Goddess of the Land] by Tibetans and Sagarmatha [head of the sea] by Nepalis, it is named in English for the surveyor Sir George Everest. It was first climbed on May 28, 1953, when Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay of Nepal reached the summit. The body of George H. L. Mallory, who died in an earlier attempt (1924), was found on the mountain in 1999.

Everest is a city in Brown County, Kansas, United States. The population was 314 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Everest is located at (39.676743, -95.425269).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.7 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 314 people, 135 households, and 90 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,226.4 people per square mile (466.3/km²). There were 156 housing units at an average density of 609.3/sq mi (231.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 90.76% White, 2.87% African American, 4.78% Native American, 0.32% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.23% of the population.

There were 135 households out of which 31.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.0% were married couples living together, 6.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 28.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.89.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $27,500, and the median income for a family was $40,000. Males had a median income of $24,500 versus $23,438 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,056. About 8.3% of families and 12.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.8% of those under age 18 and 16.7% of those age 65 or over.
