2007 is a theme-year: European Year of Equal Opportunities for All

History

On 31 May 2005 the European Commission's Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities designated 2007 as 'European Year of Equal Opportunities for All', as part of a concerted effort to promote equality and non-discrimination in the EU.

Main working theme's

The four core themes of the European Year proposed by the European Commission are:

  • Rights – raising awareness of the right to equality and non-discrimination
  • Representation – stimulating a debate on ways to increase the participation of under-represented groups in society
  • Recognition – celebrating and accommodating diversity
  • Respect and tolerance – promoting a more cohesive society

In December 2007, disabled children's charity Out & About, based in Ipswich, UK received praise from the European Year of Equal Opportunities commission for its work including disabled children in leisure activities. See http://www.oaa.co.uk
