Epistrophy

Epistrophy

Epistrophy is a jazz standard composed by Thelonious Monk and Kenny Clarke in 1942. It has been called "the first classic, modern jazz composition.

Its 'A' section is based on a pattern of alternating chords a semitone apart. As such, it is far removed from most of the jazz compositions of its day, even those composed by other Bebop musicians.
