In
emergency services,
mutual aid is a agreement among
emergency responders to lend assistance across
jurisdictional boundaries when required. This is usually in an
emergency that exceeds local resources, such as a
disaster or a
multiple-alarm fire, and in this case may be
ad hoc, requested only when such an emergency occurs. It may also be a formal
standing agreement for
cooperative emergency management on a continuing basis, such as ensuring that
firefighters are
dispatched from the nearest
fire station, regardless of which side of the
city limit the
fire (or the
caller reporting it) is on. On a smaller scale, the principle of mutual aid guides the creation of
militia and
community emergency response teams, such as
volunteer fire departments.
