Edgewater, Colorado

The City of Edgewater is a Home Rule Municipality located in Jefferson County, Colorado, United States. The cities boundaries are known as the area north of Colfax Avenue, south of 26th avenue, west of Wadsworth Boulevard, and east of Wolff Street. Though not a part of the city of Denver, it nontheless is often considered to show "inner-city" characteristics. This might be due to its low economic stability and stranded projects, including a multi-acre site at 20th and Depew Street that was purchased with Jefferson County Open Space Funds and then never used. Funding still hinders redevelopment of the abandoned site. In recent years, Edgewater has had a large increase in the number of public housing and appartment styled projects, located primarily around 19th and Fenton street over to 18th and Eaton Street. The city borders Denver to the east, Lakewood to the south and west, and the Wheat Ridge to the north. Edgewater is a predominantly Hispanic community with roughly to 85% of the population being of Hispanic origin. In the recent years, the Edgewater neighborhood has experienced serious Urban Decay, such as Unemployment, Crime, Gang activity, and even Poverty. Reported gangs located in the Edgewater community are the Surenos and Latin Kings. Edgewater schools, such as Jefferson High School, Lumberg Elementary School, and Edgewater Elementary School, are considered to be the worst in Jefferson County and among the worst in the Denver metroplitan area. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the city population was 5,159 in 2006.

Geography

Edgewater is located at (39.750336, -105.061963).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km²), all of it land. Sloan's Lake, a body of water that sits within the western edge of the city limits of Denver, is just to the east of Edgewater.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,445 people, 2,331 households, and 1,314 families residing in the city. The population density was 7,630.4 people per square mile (2,961.0/km²). There were 2,424 housing units at an average density of 3,396.9/sq mi (1,318.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 6.82% White,8.32% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.13% Asian,0.2% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 7.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 84.52% of the population.

There were 2,203 households out of which 59% had children under the age of 18 living with them,14% were married couples living together, 45% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41% were non-families. 60% of all households were made up of individuals and 10% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 4.5 and the average family size was 5.5.

In the city the population was spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 22.5% from 18 to 24, 34.9% from 25 to 44, 15.5% from 45 to 64, and 4.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 100.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $25,023, and the median income for a family was $30,426. Males had a median income of $30,347 versus $25,735 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,166. About 38.1% of families and 45.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.8% of those under age 18 and 3.9% of those age 65 or over.
