The college has recently undergone a period of structural redevelopment, with the opening of a new building in 2005, containing a new class-room block, subject-related computer work areas and state-of-the-art sports centre.
The merger of Eccles College, Salford College, and Pendleton College was originally scheduled for 1 August 2008, forming the new Salford City College . Under this proposal the corporations of Eccles and Salford will be dissolved, and all assets and staff transferred to Pendleton's administration. Pendleton College would then be renamed to 'Salford City College'. The merge proposal plans to operate the new college from the original 3 campuses.
Although the initial proposal was rejected by John Denham (the Innovation, Universities and Skills Secretary), the 3 colleges were asked to re-submit .
This revised proposal was accepted, and merger is now scheduled to take place on 1 January 2009.
