Dublin North East (Dáil Éireann constituency)

Dublin North-East is a constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas. It was created for the 1937 general election when the old Dublin North constituency divided into Dublin North West and Dublin North East. It was briefly abolished in 1977 as a result of the Electoral (Amendment) Act 1974

when it was largely replaced by the Dublin Artane constituency before being revived in 1981.

Details

It is located in the north-eastern area of County Dublin. The constituency has an electorate of 52,105 and at present is served by 3 Teachtaí Dála (TDs). The method of election is the Single Transferable Vote.

The constituency is almost entirely urbanised as well as quite diverse. It encompasses the Howth electoral area of Fingal County Council's area, the Darndale and some of the Priorswood parts of the Artane electoral area, and the Donaghmede and Raheny parts of the Donaghmede electoral areas of Dublin City Council's area of responsibility.

From 2007 on

The Minister of the Environment has (October 24 2007) recommended the adoption without amendment of the recommendations of the current Constituency Commission, which will see Dublin North East gain around 9,200 voters (Portmarnock - 8,100 and Balgriffin - 900, along with the remainder of Priorswood - 180) from Dublin North, and lose c. 2,750 (Edenmore in Raheny) to Dublin North Central. This would leave the composition as follows in terms of electoral divisions: (Dublin City) Ayrfield, Grange A to E, Priorswood A to E, Raheny-Foxfield, Raheny-Greendale, Raheny-St. Assam, and (Fingal) Baldoyle, Balgriffin, Howth, Portmarnock North, Portmarnock South, Sutton, and the part of the electoral division of Turnapin situated north of a line drawn along the Northern Cross Route (M50), passing in a clockwise direction around and excluding roundabout No. 3 at the junction of the Northern Cross Route with the M1 motorway.
