Donnacona, Quebec

Donnacona is a town of approximately 6000 inhabitants located about 40 km west of Quebec City in Portneuf MRC, Quebec, Canada. It is mostly known because of its federal prison, located on Route 138. Donnacona is also an excellent place to stop for people travelling on Autoroute 40. Its many fast-food restaurants and gas stations make Donnacona a popular place to stop.

Donnacona is the home of a paper industry (The Bowater Paper Mill) that currently employs over 300 people.

Donnacona is surrounded by several towns and villages, including:

• Neuville
• Cap-Santé
• Portneuf
• Saint-Basile
• Pont-Rouge

Most people think it is named after Donnacona, a Wendat chief from the 16th century who was taken to France, but it was actually named after the first paper mill erected in the town: Donnacona Paper. The first name of the city was Pointe-Aux-Écureuils.
