Elwes was the son of well-known English portrait painter Simon Elwes (from the recusant Cary-Elwes family) and Gloria Rodd, daughter of Rennell Rodd, 1st Baron Rennell.
At age 26, Dominick married 19-year-old Tessa Kennedy in Cuba, escaping an English court order against their marriage. After returning to London, he spent 14 days in jail for contempt. His elopement with Kennedy in 1958 was a scandale célèbre, as was his suicide in 1975.
Elwes was the father of famed artist Damian Elwes, film producer Cassian Elwes, and actor Cary Elwes. He was a best friend of Lord Lucan and was portrayed by Anthony Stewart Head in the 1994 British television movie The Trial of Lord Lucan.
