Dino Crisis

Dino Crisis is a survival horror game developed and published by Capcom that was released for the Sony Playstation on July 1, 1999. It was later ported for the Sega Dreamcast and for Microsoft Windows in 2000. It was produced and directed by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami.

A special forces team must find a way to survive in a secret government facility that has been infested with time-displaced dinosaurs. It features similar gameplay to the Resident Evil series and promoted by Capcom as "panic horror".

It was later followed by two sequels, Dino Crisis 2 and Dino Crisis 3, and a light gun-based spinoff in Capcom's Gun Survivor series, known as Dino Stalker.

Gameplay

The player character navigates through a series of desolated corridors, most of which will contain fearsome velociraptors who will lunge and attack at the protagonist at certain given points in the game, although the player character can safeguard potential attacks by using a varied arsenal of different weapons, most of which include a pistol, a shotgun, a grenade launcher and a special tranquilizer rifle.

However throughout most of the premise, the player character is almost completely alone and must rely fully on collecting ammunition and security keys to gain access to new areas. The game also makes valuable good use of its sound effects which rise in tension when near an attacker.

Despite the fact that there are many enemies, the protagonist is not given a wide variety of moves at her disposal as most of Dino Crisis is labelled through text asking you on whether you wish to pick something up, climb up a ladder or to rappel up and down ventilation ducts. Because the game utilises survival horror elements, the player character will be attacked by enemies when you least expect it. This usually occurs when walking through mundane office environments where there are lots of obstacles.

The game does not really sport a physics engine as such since bullets will not make sufficient contact with walls or any other hard obstacles, but subtle elements of it are coveyed when shooting enemy dinosaurs.

Plot

The game takes place on a fictional location known as Ibis Island in 2009. The Secret Operation Raid Team (S.O.R.T) has sent an agent, Tom, to investigate a research facility. During the recon mission, he learns that Dr. Edward Kirk, a world-renowned scientist who was reported dead two years ago, is leading a secret weapons project within the facility. S.O.R.T sends four agents (Regina, Gail, Rick, and Cooper) to acquire Dr. Kirk and return him to custody.

They arrive onto the island via air infiltration (parachute). Cooper, however, is blown off course and ends up in a jungle. A Tyrannosaurus Rex appears and chases him a short distance before eating him. The other three agents, unaware of his death, proceed with the mission.

Once inside the base, they discover the mutilated and partially devoured corpses of security personnel and scientists. Shortly thereafter, they discover that dinosaurs (particularly velociraptors and compsognathus) are the reason behind the bloodbath at the base. After evading and disposing of many dinosaurs, and several near-escapes from a Tyrannosaurus Rex, Regina and the team manage to locate Dr. Kirk and apprehend him. As they are preparing to leave via helicopter, the T-Rex returns and destroys the helicopter forcing Regina and company to flee back into the base.

After interrogating Dr. Kirk, who reveals that the dinosaurs were brought to our time by an experiment he was running using his Third Energy Technology. A rift in space was created and a pocket of the island from our time was exchanged with the same pocket only from the past, thus bringing dinosaurs back into our time. As the base becomes infested with more dinosaurs, and the T-Rex manages to gain entrance, the team discovers an underground river and a hovercraft boat and manages to use it to escape before the Third Energy reactors (which were earlier set to overload by Regina) detonate, thus wiping out all the dinosaurs on the island and preventing them from escaping to the mainland.

Characters

  • Regina (voiced by Stephanie Morgenstern) - The player's character; an intelligence agent and weapons expert, specializing in weapons maintenance.
  • Gail (Richard Yearwood) - A veteran spy, and the leader of the team. He is well known for his cold demeanor and seems to have a heart of stone. He carries a large heavy machine gun and his field of expertise seems to be combat. He cares a lot about his mission. He can either survive in the game or die. Non-playable. Also Gail highly resembles Canadian actor Mike Dopud.
  • Rick (Alex Karzis) - The third member of the team and an expert computer hacker. He carries a Sniper Rifle. He seems to be much more easy-going than Gail, providing most of the comic relief. He is African-American. Non-playable.
  • Cooper (Robert Tinkler) - The fourth member of the extraction team. He's blown off course at the start of the mission and ends up being eaten by a T. Rex. The rest of the team never learns this, and he is declared M.I.A. He carried the only outsourcing radio on the team, and his death puts the rest of the members in a bind. Non-playable.
  • Tom (Bino Tautorrez) - An agent of S.O.R.T., who has infiltrated the Ibis Island facility to investigate the reports of a new type of weapon being researched. He is wounded by a dinosaur, and later dies. Non-Playable. Tom was modeled after Canadian voiceover artist Bino Tautorrez.
  • Dr. Edward Kirk (Adrian Truss) - The genius behind the Third Energy Theory. He was approached by the Borginian Republic who were interested in the properties of Third Energy as a weapon, and promised him all the funding, facilities, researchers and equipment he needed. To that end, he staged his death and moved to Ibis Island, to where a Third Energy research facility had been set up for him. During the course of the game he eludes the dinosaurs as well as the player, and even kills some of his researchers to cover his tracks. He shows no remorse for the consequences of his actions, and only cares about his work. Non-Playable.

Ending

There are three possible endings based on choices made by the player. Near the end of the game, the player has the option to either go after Dr. Kirk or find your way off of the island.

The first ending (chase Dr. Kirk) results in Regina and Gail capturing Dr. Kirk. As a twist, Gail reveals that the whole mission was a front and the government did not want Dr. Kirk, but instead wanted the Third Energy to use in warfare. Gail gives Regina an optic disk containing all the data on the Third Energy. Shortly after, Gail dies from injuries suffered earlier in the game. Regina and Rick, during their departure in a watercraft, do battle with the T. Rex. Regina kills it using a remote explosive, and they escape with Dr. Kirk in custody.

The second ending (escape the island) results in Regina, Gail, and Rick escaping without Dr. Kirk. During the final T. Rex battle, Rick fires a rocket from a watercraft. The rocket hits a fuel tank, causing a massive overload in the Third Energy generator and completely disintegrating a portion of Ibis Island in the process. The three agents escape safely, but the status of Dr. Kirk is unknown.

The third ending is the 'good' ending; it can be achieved by choosing to leave Dr. Kirk, but actually going after him. Regina locates Dr. Kirk in a hangar, preparing a helicopter to get away in. She knocks Kirk out, and informs Rick of her situation. The T. Rex chases Rick and Gail to Regina's location. The three quickly board the chopper and flee from the T. Rex. During their escape, Rick drops a bomb from the helicopter onto the T. Rex, killing it immediately. All three agents get out alive with Dr. Kirk in tow.

The game keeps track of how many endings you have unlocked at the end of the game. After all three endings are found, the player unlocks Operation: Wipeout, a side game where the player must eliminate a set amount of dinosaurs in a certain time with limited ammunition.
