Derek Thompson (born on
4 April 1948) is a
Belfast-born British television
actor, most notable for playing
Charlie Fairhead in the long running series
Casualty. In the late 1970s and early 1980s he was a regular in BBC and ITV dramas, including
Softly Softly,
Play for Today,
Harry's Game and the 1977 series of
Rock Follies. He also had minor roles in the films
Yanks and
Breaking Glass. Prior to appearing in Casualty he had a recurring role, as DS Jimmy Fenton, in the ITV police drama,
The Gentle Touch.
He is the elder of a pair of twins by ten minutes. In the early 1960s, at the age of 13, he was half of a singing duo with his twin sister, "Elaine and Derek". They released one, eponymously titled, album on the Parlophone label. The duo also appeared in the 1965 film, Gonks Go Beat.
He is the only remaining original cast member of Casualty, and in 2004 went on six-month sabbatical to Canada.
He played Jeff, Harold Shand's treacherous lieutenant, in The Long Good Friday.
