As part of the Turkish Football Federation’s Süper Lig, Denizlispor have gained international recognition in recent years, when their fifth place finish in 2002 qualified them for a match in the UEFA Cup. That year, the team made a surprising run, defeating other European teams like FC Lorient, Sparta Prague, and Olympique Lyonnais, before losing in the fourth round to FC Porto, who would eventually go on to win the tournament. In anticipation of a promising season, the green and black hope to improve on last year’s seventh place finish by adding Darryl Roberts to their roster.
History
Denizlispor was founded on May 26, 1966 as a merger of two smaller youth sports clubs, Çelik Yeşilspor Gençlik and Pamukkale Gençlik. They joined to form what is now Denizlispor, which was at the time a little-known sports & youth club in the Çaybaşı district of Denizli city. This union was then registered with Turkish football's governing body, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) under the name of Denizlispor Youth Club. The new football team joined Turkish football's 2nd division for the upcoming season on July 14th, 1966. Turkish Football Federation. Denizlispor's the best success was 5th twice in 2001-2002 and 2003-2004 seasons.2002 UEFA Run
Denizlispor participated in European cups only once in its history. In 2002, after becoming 5th in Turkish league, Denizlispor qualified to play in the UEFA Cup. However Denizlispor made an unexpected run that was ended in 4th round when they lost to F.C. Porto, who won the cup that year. French FC Lorient, Sparta Prague and another Ligue 1 giant Olympique Lyonnais were all shockingly defeated by a lesser talented squad Denizlispor.Emblem
The Denizlispor emblem was designed by Yakup Ünel, a founding member of the team. The emblem is based around the rooster which is identified with the province of Denizli. The team's colours come from the colours of a rooster.League participations
