David Mercer (27 June 1928, Wakefield, England – 8 August 1980, Haifa, Israel) was an English playwright and dramatist. After working as a technician and serving in the Royal Navy he attended Kings College, Newcastle (which then awarded degrees validated by Durham University) and graduated in 1953.
David Mercer wrote plays that studied decline in British culture which became well known in the 1960s, including Morgan, A Suitable Case for Treatment (television, 1962) which was re-made as a film in 1966 called Morgan! and After Haggerty (1970). Much of his early 1960s television work for the BBC was made in collaboration with the director Don Taylor. He is depicted as Malcolm Sloman in Trevor Griffiths' 1973 play The Party.
