David Margolick is an American journalist who is currently a contributing editor at Condé Nast Portfolio. Before joining Portfolio, Margolick was a longtime contributing editor at Vanity Fair, where he wrote about culture, the media, and politics. From 1981 to 1986 he was a legal reporter on the metropolitan desk of The New York Times and from 1987 to 1996 served as the Times national legal affairs editor and law columnist. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Stanford Law School. His weekly column at The New York Times was called At the Bar, which he wrote for seven years. He is the author of Strange Fruit: The Biography of a Song. He is noted for his attempt to provide a balanced view of his subjects, with Stanford University's magazine noting, "In a world of instant news and short attention spans, Margolick’s carefully documented stories are what a five-course meal in a French restaurant is to fast food. He is in his element when he can find shades of gray where others are screaming black and white."
