Dr. David L. Lieber, a
rabbi and a
scholar, is the president emeritus of the
University of Judaism (now known as the
American Jewish University) and the senior editor of the
Etz Hayim Humash. He helped pioneer the
Ramah camps, serving as the founding head counselor in the first of the camps
in Wisconsin, a director in
Maine, the founding director of
Camp Ramah in California, and the founding director of the
Mador .
Early years
Born 1925, in Poland, Dr. Lieber immigrated to the United States, at age 2, with his parents . He grew up in the Lower East Side of Manhattan .
Education
He attended CCNY and the Jewish Theological Seminary where he received his Doctorate]] of Hebrew Letters (D.H.L.) . He completed the coursework for his Ph.D.,at Columbia University, but never completed his dissertation .
Military service
He served as a
Chaplain in the
U.S. Air Force during the
Korean War .
Career
He was the Assistant Rabbi and Sinai Temple and the Rabbi of Hollywood Temple Beth El . He served as Dean of Students at the
University of Judaism, and later as its President . He served two years as the President of the
Rabbinical Assembly . He retired in 2007 .
