After a watershed final year at Palm Beach Currumbin State School, where he was the Australian Schoolboys fullback and debuted for Burleigh Bears in the Queensland Cup, Boyd continued to take large steps forward in his career in 2006, winning the Broncos' rookie of the year award.
Boyd made his debut for the Broncos against North Queensland in round 1 of 2006 on the wing and scored a try. He was a solid performer in his rookie season and even had an opportunity to play in his favoured fullback position from round 16 to 24 after Karmichael Hunt fractured a foot bone in round 15. Boyd was a member of the 2006 premiership team.
At the beginning of the 2007 season, Boyd was unable to perform to the same standard as he did throughout his rookie season. However, after being moved from the wing to the centres, Boyd began to once again perform consistently.
