It is among the world's oldest radio symphony orchestras, founded in 1925. Two noted musicians, conductors Fritz Busch and the Russian Nikolai Malko, laid the foundations for the orchestra's musical tradition.
From summer 2004 Thomas Dausgaard, former principal guest conductor, took over as the first Danish principal conductor. His predecessor was German conductor Gerd Albrecht. Yuri Temirkanov is principal guest conductor.
