Coronation Cup

This article is about the horse race at Epsom - for details on the football competition played in 1953, see Coronation Cup (football)

The Coronation Cup is a Group 1 flat horse race in the United Kingdom open to thoroughbreds which are four-years-old or above. It is run over a distance of 1 mile 4 furlongs and 10 yards (2,423 metres) at Epsom Downs Racecourse, and it takes place annually during the Derby meeting in early June.

It was first run in 1902 to mark the Coronation of King Edward VII. Prior to this there had been a similar race called the Epsom Cup for which three-year-olds were also eligible.
