Churchlands Senior High School is a public co-educational school in Churchlands, a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, approximately ten minutes from the central business district. The current principal is Neil Hunt with deputies Bernie Dunn, Greg Zehnder and Stephen Spice.
History
Churchlands Senior High School was founded in 1962 and has since established a tradition of excellence built on the outstanding academic, musical, cultural and sporting achievements of its students. For years Churchlands has been one of the leading music schools in Western Australia and it's specialist programs have been highly sought after.
In 1991 a female student died after being stabbed 18 times by her former boyfriend. The attacker is now serving a life sentence.
In early 1997 the majority of the school was burnt down in a failed attempt to destroy evidence of a break-in. The school has since undergone a major rebuild after spending a few years using demountables for classrooms.
Recently the school's administration block was badly damaged by fire as a result of arson.
Academic status
Churchlands Senior High School holds a very high standard of academic results, including receiving many major awards such as the Beazley Medal on a number of occasions. In 2004, Churchlands introduced the 'Gifted and Talented' and the Accelerated Learning Programmes to reinforce the current high standards.
Music
Churchlands Senior High School is one of two schools in Perth to offer a selective entry music program, the other being
John Curtin College of the Arts. It teaches music at an elite level, encompassing many methods of teaching. Churchlands is renowned for its music, with all ensembles being well represented at their respective festivals. The students involved in the program perform regularly for school concerts and numerous extra curricular performances. Prospective students are auditioned early in their final year of Primary School with successful students being awarded a place in the Gifted and Talented Music Program. This entitles them to individual instrumental lessons. Students who are not successful may be offered places in either the Special Music Option or General Music courses where they are provided with group lessons.
Music tour
Churchlands embarks on an international music tour every 3 years. The most recent was in 2006, the group of 131 music students travelled and performed in Vienna, Salzburg, London, Hereford and Southport. A highlight of this journey was the rehearsal and performances with the
London Philharmonic Orchestra. This was the second time in consecutive tours that Churchlands has worked closely with the LPO, with the LPO inviting Churchlands back in the future.
The next music tour is planned for 2009 when selected years 10-12 students will be travelling to
