It is not recognized by the Roman Catholic Church The AP Reilly Foundation that funds and supports the church is reported to have $30 million as of August 2007. The church sits on about 11 acres of land owned by the Foundation and worth around $3 million.

Its 70 or so members are traditional Catholics seek to worship in the way they believe all Roman Catholics always had until the 1960s. This includes the celebration of the Tridentine Latin Mass.

Mel Gibson funded the construction of the chapel, and the congregation has procured the services of an elderly, formerly diocesan, now independent, traditionalist Catholic priest (Rev. Fr. Louis Campbell PhD).

In May, 2007 Mel Gibson flew to Hermosillo, Mexico, where he attended a Tridentine Mass during which grandchildren of his friends and two of his children received the sacrament of Confirmation, administered by Archbishop emeritus Carlos Quintero Arce.

The same Archbishop Quintero Arce had consecrated the church of the Holy Family in February, 2007.

Arce has since become a friend of the Gibson family and visited the Holy Family chapel several times.
