Christian-Democratic People's Party (Moldova)

The Christian Democratic People's Party (Partidul Popular Creştin Democrat) is a Christian democratic political party in Moldova. In the last legislative elections on March 6, 2005, the party won 9.1% of the popular vote and 11 out of 101 seats. Led by Iurie Roşca, the CDPP is the only major political party in Moldova that supports unification with Romania. Thanks to the support for the communist President Vladimir Voronin he got reelected. Since April 4, 2005 PPCD lost several deputies, mayors, councillors and members to the liberal-democrat parties. PPCD is an informal coalition party of the Communists.

History

It is the successor of the Democratic Movement of Moldova (1988-1989), Popular Front of Moldova (1989-1992), and the Christian Democratic Popular Front (1992-1999). In March 2005, the party became an observer member of the European People's Party (EPP). The party is a full member of the European Christian Political Movement (ECPM). Because of the close cooperation with the communists, PPCD gets no real support from other European parties.
