Charles Wilmot, 1st Viscount Wilmot
Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - Cite This SourceCharles Wilmot, 1st Viscount Wilmot of Athlone (c. 1572 – 1644) was the son of Edward Wilmot of Culham and Elizabeth Stafford.
He was married twice first about 1605 to Sarah Anderson daughter of Sir Henry Anderson, Sheriff of London. His second marriage was to Mary Colley on or before 28 April, 1630 she was the daughter of Sir Henry Colley of Castle Carbery. There were no children born from the marriage.
He matriculated from Magdalen College, Oxford but did not take his degree. He was serving as a captain in the Irish war in 1592 and was a colonel aged 27 in 1599 when he was knighted by the Earl of Essex. In 1600, he was governor of Cork He besieged and captured Listowel Castle from Thomas Fitzmaurice, Lord of Kerry in October 1600. He was back in England by 1610 and was elected as member of Parliament for Launceston.
In 1616 after the death of his wife Sarah, he was back in Ireland as Lord President of Connaught. On 4 January 1621, he was created Viscount Wilmot. In 1627, he served in the expedition to the Isle of Rhé, part of attempts to relieve the Siege of La Rochelle, but returned to Ireland as general and commander in chief of the forces there. His will dated 21 May 1643 refers to a house near Charing Cross adjoining Scotland Yard. He was dead by April 1644, when he was succeeded by his only surviving son Henry.
Children
He married Sarah daughter of Sir Henry Anderson sheriff of London. Their children were:- Arthur Wilmot (born before 1610, died October 31/November 1, 1632) married Penelope, daughter of Sir Moysey Hill of Hillsborough, Provost Marshall of Ulster
- Charles Wilmot (baptised 3 March, 1610/1, and died unmarried before 21 August, 1633)
- Elizabeth Wilmot (baptised 25 May 1612), but probably died young
- Henry Wilmot, 1st Earl of Rochester (baptised 26 October 1613 – 24 February 1658) married on 28 August, 1633 to Frances Morton daughter of Sir George Morton of Milborne St. Andrews.
