Both Norwood and True Grit were made into movies starring fellow Arkansan Glen Campbell.
In the 1990s, he published short fiction and biographical pieces in The Atlantic Monthly, including "Combinations of Jacksons" and "I Don't Talk Service No More". 
Portis was born in El Dorado, Arkansas. He is reclusive and travels frequently to Mexico.
