Chapelizod
Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - Cite This SourceChapelizod (Séipéal Iosóid in Irish, meaning "Iseult's Chapel") is a village in Dublin, Ireland.
Chapelizod village is located west of Dublin city. It lies along the River Liffey and is bordered to the west by Palmerstown, to the north-west by the Strawberry Beds, to the south by part of Ballyfermot and the main western thoroughfare out of Dublin city, the N4 road, and to the north by the Phoenix Park. It is very close to the Cromlech in Phoenix Park.
Chapelizod is possibly the oldest village in Dublin and in fact outdates Dublin City. The Anna Livia bridge in Chapelizod is the oldest and best-built masonry bridge of its kind in Ireland. The Phoenix Park Distillery was the only Scottish-owned distillery in Ireland until prohibition in the US led to its decline and eventual demise. The Distillery lay vacant for many years before being burned down and eventually demolished.
Chapelizod is rumoured to be the burial site of Iseult of Ireland.
Interesting buildings in the village include St Laurence's Church, and a house mentioned by Le Fanu in his ghost stories (it is not entirely clear which building this is).
Every year, the Chapelizod Community Festival is held between the 1st and 2nd Sundays in July. First held in 1994, the festival has grown to be one of the highlights of the summer. The festival is run by volunteers and funded mainly by local business sponsors.
