Calon FM is a community radio station broadcasting primarily to Wrexham and the surrounding Wrexham Urban Area, along with fair coverage through much of the central areas of Wrexham County Borough, and parts of south-west Flintshire. It is produced and broadcast at The Wall Recording Studio at Glyndŵr University (formally NEWI), Mold Road, Wrexham.
Calon FM first launched as a RSL radio station, originally covering events at the 2005 Wrexham Science Festival on 87.7FM . In 2006, the station was granted a 5-year community radio licence. The station officially launched on 1 March 2008 on 105FM, after briefly testing for some weeks before. Calon FM's aim is to "encourage and facilitate the empowerment, life long learning, development and generation of our community, regardless of race, gender, age or disability" .
Calon FM broadcasts a variety of shows including interviews, music and discussion produced by presenters and volunteers at The Wall centre, however most off-peak broadcast is automated music playlists. Calon FM aims for its daytime output to be 70% music and 30% speech, whilst its evening output to be 80%-20% respectively, with programmes in English and Welsh .
Calon FM is one of three local radio stations serving the area; the others being GCap Media's Marcher Sound, being the Independent Local Radio station covering Wrexham and Chester, and the online Wrexham FM, which also made various bids for the Wrexham community radio licence and also previously broadcast as an RSL .
