Black Mountain is a mountain located in Catron County, New Mexico, in the Gila Wilderness.

Black Mountain stands within the watershed of the Gila River, which drains into the Colorado River and thence into the Gulf of California in Mexico. The eastern and northern slopes of Black Mtn. drain into the East Fork of the Gila River; the western and southern sides drain into the Middle Fork.

Black Mountain is 9,287 feet tall. There is a good, narrow pack trail that is well maintained but not overdeveloped. The Black Mountain Lookout features sweeping views of the Gila Wilderness. Today the mountain is the site of a large lava rock mining operation.

Black Mountain Lookout Cabin

The Black Mountain Lookout Cabin was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. Built in 1925, it is noted for its architectural and historical significance.
