Plot Summary
A young man (
Joel McCrea) falls overboard and is saved by a beautiful Polynesian girl named Luana (
Dolores Del Rio). They fall in love, but their idyll is smashed when the local volcano begins to erupt. The man discovers that the local custom is to sacrifice a young woman to the volcanic gods. They try to escape but realize that "east is east and west is west, and never the twain shall meet.
Curiosities
This film was made pre-Hays Code that nudity could be shown. The film scandalized the public of this year due to the bold scenes between Dolores del Rio and Joel McCrea where they were swimming naked.
Dolores del Rio turned in " the erotic exotic myth" most important of the epoch.
Orson Welles was affirming that in this movie, she was representing " the highest ideally erotically ".
