Betaine-homocysteine methyltransferase

Betaine-homocysteine methyltransferase

Homocysteine, a potentially cytotoxic amino acid, is remethylated to methionine in two ways:

By Methionine Synthase (MTR): homocysteine + 5-methyltetrahydrofolate ---> methionine + Dihydrofolate

By BHMT: homocysteine + betaine ---> methionine + dimethylglycine

BHMT is expressed most predominantly in the liver and kidney.
