The Medical Component (Medische Component, Composante Médicale) is the medical service of the Belgian Armed Forces. It provides medical support for the Belgian Armed Forces and its operations, participates in humanitarian aid and provides certain services to the civilian society. The current Commander of the Medical Component is Brigade General Danielle Levillez.

Organisation

The Medical Component consists of the following units:

  • A medical operational command (COMOPSMED), located in Evere.
  • 4 Operational Medical Centres (CMO), located in Brussels, Leopoldsburg, Marche-en-Famenne and Zeebruges. These centres have a number of so-called Medical Antennas at their disposal, spread across the area for which they are responsible, as well as Advanced Medical Elements (EMA) in order to guarantee medical support for operations and exercises.
  • 3 Medical Intervention Elements (EMI), located in Destelbergen, Ghlin and Landen, which provide the means of transportation for the wounded as well as more specialised medical care in the field.
  • A Medical Technical Intervention Element (EMI-Tech), located in Nivelles, which is responsible for medical supplies in Belgium and abroad.
  • The Military Hospital of Neder-Over-Heembeek.
