Wikipedia
Banbury Castle stood near the centre of the town of Banbury, Oxfordshire ().

It was built in 1135 by Alexander, Bishop of Lincoln as a domestic rather than a military building. During the reign of King John in 1201–7 it was strengthened and in the 13th–14th century it was remodelled into a concentric plan. During the Civil War it was besieged twice and was demolished in 1648. Stones from it were used to build houses in the town. Nothing can now be seen of the castle. The site was excavated in 1973–74.
