He obtained his B.A. from Williams College in Massachusetts in 1982, and received a M.A. from the University of Michigan in 1990. He also holds a law degree from Harvard Law School.Levin began his career as an advocate for nursing home workers in Michigan, and also worked for the AFL-CIO.
2006 Election
Levin ran unsuccessfully for the 13th District Senate Seat in Oakland County, losing the election to former State Representative John Pappageorge. The race was close with Pappageorge edging out Levin by only 776 votes; Levin actually led in the election returns until very late at night on Election Day, when the northwestern precincts of Troy (traditionally the most Republican parts of a Republican stronghold) reported overwhelmingly for Pappageorge. It was reported that Levin was hurt both by the fact that he had recently moved back to the Metro Detroit area from Washington, DC and a perceived nepotism on behalf of some voters. Some speculation centered around whether Green Party candidate Kyle McBee's share of the vote can be attributed to a left-leaning protest vote for these reasons.
