Ander Crenshaw

Ander Crenshaw (born September 1, 1944), American politician, has been a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives since 2001, representing (map). He was born in Jacksonville, Florida, was educated at the University of Georgia (A.B. 1966) and received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Florida.

Career

Ander Crenshaw worked briefly as an investment banker before entering politics, which allowed him to become a wealthy candidate. He earned his law degree in 1969 and continued to practice law while serving in Florida government.

Crenshaw served in the Florida House of Representatives from 1972 through 1978, and in the Florida Senate from 1986 through 1994. He became the first Republican elected president of the Senate in 118 years in November 1992, but agreed to serve only one year instead of the usual two, as a compromise between Republicans and Democrats who were evenly split in the Senate that year.

In 1980, Crenshaw finished third in the Republican primary for a U.S. Senate seat, earning roughly 13% of the vote.

In 1994, he unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for Governor, winning several counties but ultimately losing out to Jeb Bush. Crenshaw finished fourth (12.1%) behind Tom Gallagher and Jim Smith.

In 2000, Crenshaw returned to politics when he was elected to the United States House of Representatives from the 4th Congressional District of Florida. He has now become a Deputy Minority Whip in the Republican Leadership. In 2005, a Republican effort was launched to convince the Congressman to run for U.S. Senate in the seat currently held by Bill Nelson.

Election 2006

Position on 2008 "Bailout"

On September 29, 2008, Crenshaw voted for the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. He was one of only three Florida Republicans to do so.
