Alyeska

Alyeska

1. Alyeska is an archaic spelling of the Aleut word Alaskax meaning "mainland", "great country", or "great land". The American state of Alaska derives its name from this word. Alyeska is related to the word Unalaska (or Ounalashka) from the same root.

The community of Alyeska near Anchorage (in the Anchorage Municipality), Alaska, takes its name from this particular spelling of Alaska, as does the skiing area and hotel Alyeska Resort at Mount Alyeska in Girdwood, and the corporation Alyeska Pipeline Service Company.

2. In Albanian, alyeska is a word meaning no further. The roots are from the Proto-Albanian ale/alye ("further") and ska/sko ("no more").
